In a spirited performance, the gallant Manly Warringah Sea Eagles took on the Western Suburbs Magpies in the opening round of the SG Ball Cup season.
Led by their new coach Nathan Hogan, the smaller Sea Eagles stood tall against the formidable Magpies pack, trailing by just two points at half-time.
However, as the game progressed, the visitors pulled away and claimed a convincing 44-18 victory.
Despite the loss, the Sea Eagles showcased their flair and creativity against one of the tournament favorites.
The Magpies, boasting talent from the Wests Tigers top 30 squad, including hooker Tallyn Da Silva and prop Jordan Miller, were supported by local juniors, such as full-back Heath Mason, center Luke Laulilii, and winger William Craig.
These players had spent time with the Wests Tigers NRL squad during the summer.
The Sea Eagles made an impressive start to the game, with winger Druzel Taula leaping spectacularly to score the opening try off a crossfield kick from half-back Callum Dowell, securing a 4-0 lead within the first four minutes.
Dowell himself displayed skill and finesse as he carved through the defense, scoring a 25-meter try to extend the lead to 8-0 after 10 minutes.
