Savala Set to Extend Contract Amid Rival Interest

The Sydney Roosters are reportedly poised to announce a significant retention achievement, as Hugo Savala is expected to extend his contract with the club.

Savala's current contract is set to expire at the end of 2026, and he had been considering options outside of the Roosters. This interest is not surprising, particularly following the Roosters' signing of Daly Cherry-Evans for the 2026 season. Despite a standout performance in 2025, Savala may face being left out of coach Trent Robinson's 17-man squad.

However, Savala's ability to play in various positions might still grant him a spot on the bench in 2025. That bench role would typically be filled by Connor Watson, who will likely not be needed at hooker due to the acquisition of Reece Robson from the North Queensland Cowboys.

Looking ahead, Savala could return to the halves in 2027, though he will have to compete with rising star Toby Rodwell for the opportunity to partner with Sam Walker, who is regarded as the Roosters' long-term starting halfback.

According to News Corp, Savala has been on a development contract with the team but is now eager to solidify his position, despite exploring the open market.

Reports indicate that the new contract will span two years, ensuring that the utility player remains a Rooster until the end of 2028.
