The Newcastle Knights have officially announced the acquisition of Sandon Smith, set to join the team at the start of the 2026 NRL season.

Previously under contract with the Roosters, Smith was released after falling behind Hugo Savala in the team's lineup during the 2025 season. Additionally, rumors persist that the Roosters may sign Daly Cherry-Evans for the 2026 season.

Smith's contract with the Knights is for four years, ensuring his stay in the Hunter region until at least the end of 2029.

Although his specific role in the team remains to be clarified, he is expected to form a halves partnership with newcomer Dylan Brown, who recently signed a decade-long deal after departing from the Parramatta Eels at the conclusion of 2025.

"We are delighted Sandon will be joining us on a four-year deal," said Peter O'Sullivan, head of recruitment for the Knights. "Being a Central Coast junior who represented the Knights in the pathways, Sandon's signing is great for everyone."

O'Sullivan further emphasized Smith's capabilities, stating, "Sandon has a brilliant game sense, with the ability to break a game open and create opportunities for those around him, along with being one of the best goal kickers in the NRL."
