A consortium led by former player Mason Caton-Brown has been granted membership approval by the RFL for a new Salford rugby team, which will join the 2026 Betfred Championship.

According to reports from skysports.com, the RFL confirmed it had "received three high-quality and extremely well-considered proposals" aimed at preserving the legacy of professional rugby league in Salford. The proposal by Caton-Brown's consortium, named Salford RLFC Ltd, "demonstrated a clear commitment to sustainable governance, financial responsibility and long-term stability."

Earlier this month, the RFL terminated Salford Red Devils' membership after the High Court wound up the club due to outstanding debts, thus ending the club's 152-year history.

This year, Salford was relegated from the Super League and is set to kick off their Championship campaign against Oldham on January 16.

RFL interim CEO Abi Ekoku commented, "The quality of proposals we received reflects the strength of commitment to Rugby League in Salford." She added that the decision, made in collaboration with Salford City Council and its stadium management team (CosCos), prioritizes the long-term interests of the club and the local community, along with the sport of rugby league as a whole.
