Salford Red Devils have called off their Super League match against Wakefield Trinity, set for Sunday, due to a lack of available players.

According to reports from skysports.com, the club announced their decision on Friday evening, citing "significant concerns regarding player welfare." Currently, only two senior players are available for the game, alongside 15 academy players.

The team is facing financial difficulties that have led to instability regarding its future. Issues such as delayed wage payments, a significant departure of players, and a dismal record of 19 losses in 21 Super League games contribute to a troubling situation.

Even though the club claims this cancellation is a unique event, it raises questions about their capacity to finish the season, especially with five rounds still to play.

The official statement read: "The Round 22 Betfred Super League fixture between Salford Red Devils and Wakefield Trinity which was scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled."

They added, "The club have reluctantly taken this decision as there were significant concerns regarding player welfare and have been in consultation with the Rugby Football League, RL Commercial and Rugby League Cares."
