Salford Red Devils have been penalized with a two-point deduction in the Betfred Super League for violating a series of RFL operational rules during their Round One match against St Helens on February 15.

According to reports from skysports.com, the Red Devils fielded a squad primarily composed of academy players, resulting in a historic 82-0 defeat.

Throughout the season, Salford has faced strict salary-cap limitations due to ongoing financial difficulties, including delays in compensating players and staff.

This deduction adjusts Salford's points total from six to four, which, while seemingly insignificant, could critically impact their already limited chances of staying in the top division.

A statement from the Rugby Football League (RFL) noted: "The Salford management accepted the team chosen for the match at St Helens was significantly weaker than it needed to be and several first-team players advertised as being unable to play in the match were in fact available to be selected."

"The club accepted that this offence merited a points deduction. Salford have also been fined £5,000, half of it suspended until 2029."
