Salford Red Devils have been dealt a tough blow ahead of their season opener against St Helens in the Betfred Super League.

Due to salary cap constraints, the team will be relying heavily on their reserve squad players for the match.

The club recently underwent a takeover, which was announced in dramatic fashion on Sky Sports.

However, the deal is still pending approval by the RFL, adding another hurdle for the struggling team.

Salford was hit with a reduced sustainability cap of £1.2m last month and were forced to offload players by the RFL.

Despite receiving an advance in central distribution money from other Super League teams, the Red Devils are still feeling the pinch.

Head coach Paul Rowley had to make do with a smaller squad in their recent Challenge Cup victory over Midlands Hurricanes.

Unfortunately, the salary cap issues have not been resolved in time for their upcoming clash at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

In a statement, the club confirmed that they will be fielding a team comprised mostly of reserve squad players for the season opener.

Fans are hopeful that the change in ownership will bring about positive changes, but for now, the Red Devils must soldier on with what they have.
