The Parramatta Eels secured their first win of the 2025 NRL season in a thrilling golden point contest against the St George Illawarra Dragons, with Zac Lomax kicking the winning field goal against his former team.

In a strategic move, coach Ryles switched up the backline combinations, moving Lomax back to the wing where he had been successful with the Dragons and pairing him with Will Penisini on the right-hand side.

Sean Russell shifted to left centre to partner Josh Addo-Carr.

Ryles explained the reasoning behind the change, stating, "Will [Penisini] is back on the right, so he and Zac are a combo there with Zac [Lomax] on the wing.

Sean Russell is at left centre.

He trained there all pre-season.

Foxxy [Josh Addo-Carr] is an out and out left winger that can kind of play both sides because of his experience."

This adjustment proved to be effective, as the new backline combination contributed to the Eels' victory in a crucial game that could have potentially resulted in a zero and five start to the season.

Despite initial uncertainties, the players adapted well to their new roles and showcased their abilities on the field.

The win not only provided a much-needed boost for the Eels but also demonstrated the importance of flexibility and strategic decision-making in rugby league.

Ryles' decision to switch up the backline proved to be a key factor in the Eels' success, highlighting the importance of adaptation and innovation in the sport.

By utilizing the strengths of each player and creating new combinations, the team was able to overcome a tough opponent and secure a vital victory early in the season.

The win not only boosted morale within the squad but also emphasized the significance of making bold tactical moves to achieve desired outcomes in competitive NRL matches.
