The Dropout

In the battle between St Helens and Wigan, Saints boss Paul Wellens believes that the mutual success of both clubs only adds to the intensity of their derby clash on Friday.

Last year, Saints lost the Super League title to Wigan, ending their four-year reign at the top - a bitter pill to swallow after their victory over the Cherry and Whites in 2020.

Wigan, on the other hand, have been quick to follow in Saints' footsteps, defeating Penrith just like their rivals had done a year earlier.

Wellens emphasized that this match is more than just a quest for two points; it is a historical fixture steeped in fierce rivalry.

"I'm a firm believer that Wigan Warriors and St Helens need each other to be at their best," said Wellens in an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside.

"This rivalry runs deep, and a strong showing from both sides only serves to elevate the competition and the drama on the field." Both clubs stand to benefit from their strength, enhancing the storied history of the sport and the passion of the fans.
