Queensland Rugby League (QRL) is set to examine a tackle from a trial match that resulted in a serious injury to a player.
Burleigh Bears' outside back, Jacek McLaurin, was quickly taken to the hospital after sustaining a spinal injury during a match at Piggabeen Oval on Saturday.
Following the incident, McLaurin received immediate medical attention at the venue and was later transported by air to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where he currently remains in critical condition.
The game, featuring the Burleigh Bears and Tweed Seagulls, was halted in the second half due to the injury and ultimately abandoned.
A QRL representative stated that the league will conduct a review and "continue to work with both clubs to ensure wellbeing services were offered to all members."
Damien Driscoll, CEO of Burleigh Bears, mentioned he had visited McLaurin, who joined the team in the off-season and hails from Wollongong, NSW.
"He made an impression straight away … he's a popular player and enthusiastic personality," Driscoll remarked.
"He's in great care, obviously he has a tough road ahead."
"[Times like these are] quite raw, we'll gather as a club tonight … there is support available and QRL have been a good support."
