Victor Radley has expressed support for his Roosters teammate Billy Smith in his pursuit of an England debut during this year's Ashes series, following Smith's declaration of allegiance to the English team.
Smith's family background plays a significant role in his decision; both his parents hail from London, although his father moved to Manchester at a young age before relocating to Australia. Interestingly, while his father is a fan of Manchester United, Smith himself is a supporter of Liverpool.
Feeling connected to his heritage, the talented centre recently had a discussion with England coach Shaun Wane regarding his wish to represent England, which would disqualify him from participating in the State of Origin under current eligibility rules.
"I just had a conversation with the coach a couple of weeks ago, and that's all it's really been," Smith remarked.
"Both Mum and Dad are both born in England and we go generations back, so there's a strong tie to that country and there always has been," he added, highlighting the depth of his ties to England.
Radley, who made the decision to represent England a few years prior, expressed eagerness to see Smith receive an opportunity with the national squad after the latter has successfully navigated a challenging injury period with the Roosters.
"I didn't want to bring it up with him because I know what Billy's like - he wants to be present and doesn't want to think too far ahead," Radley noted, emphasizing his respect for Smith's focus on the present.
