Rookie utility Hugo Savala has emerged as a key player for the Sydney Roosters as they prepare for the NRL finals, with coach Trent Robinson expressing confidence in his abilities.
Despite Savala's potential, his role may be temporary since star halfback Sam Walker is recovering from an ankle injury that required surgery on August 30. Walker suffered the injury during a round 26 match against the Dolphins.
Robinson noted Walker's swift recovery, stating, "He's recovered probably quicker than I've seen most syndesmosis injuries," and added that Walker is progressing well, moving in a straight line.
While the coach did not confirm Walker's availability for a potential preliminary final matchup against Penrith, he did not dismiss the possibility either.
Savala has participated in 19 games this season, primarily playing in the centres, but Robinson stated he is well-suited to assume the No. 6 jersey. The 24-year-old has a strong background in playing as a half.
Robinson emphasized the advantage of having Savala already integrated with the team's dynamics: "You lose a player in that position, you've got to bring someone up from reserve grade, or they haven't been playing, whereas Hugo has been able to play in other positions."
Looking ahead to the finals, the Roosters have faced challenges against Penrith, losing four of their last five encounters, although they secured a defensive victory in their most recent matchup.
Robinson remains optimistic about the team's prospects in the finals, asserting, "It doesn't matter whether you've won or lost the last three weeks, all that matters is tomorrow," as he acknowledges the importance of managing emotions and strategies going forward.
Forward Angus Crichton has been named on the interchange bench after missing considerable time due to injury, but Robinson mentioned that he is not yet ready to play.
