Roosters coach Trent Robinson has addressed speculation about Sandon Smith's future at the club amid rumors of a potential signing of Daly Cherry-Evans.
While the Roosters are favorites to secure Cherry-Evans, Robinson has reassured that Smith's place in the team is secure.
There is belief that a partnership between Cherry-Evans and Sam Walker, once he recovers from injury, could make the Roosters strong premiership contenders.
This has sparked concerns about Smith's future, as he has struggled to find consistency in his performances this season.
Smith was seen as the successor to Luke Keary in the halves for the Roosters, but his partnership with Chad Townsend has not produced the desired results.
Despite some standout moments, including an upset win against the Panthers, Smith has also made some costly errors on the field.
Robinson, however, remains confident in Smith's abilities, highlighting his potential for growth and development.
"There's 30, 40, 50 minutes of really good periods and that's really natural, with the amount of time he's spent in the NRL at the moment," said Robinson.
"There's some really good signs that we like.
We're just going to keep forging forward and keep backing him to develop his game." Smith, at just 22 years old, is still a relatively young player in the NRL and is set to continue starting in the halves for the Roosters.
Despite the potential addition of Cherry-Evans to the Roosters, Robinson's comments suggest that the club is committed to supporting Smith's development and believes in his long-term potential.
The upcoming match against South Sydney will offer Smith another opportunity to showcase his skills and contribute to the team's success.
