In a shocking development that has sent shockwaves through the rugby league world, Sydney Roosters veteran Luke Keary has announced his retirement from the NRL at the end of the 2024 season.

This bombshell news comes just months after Keary signed a one-year extension to continue playing until 2025.

Keary, a three-time premiership winner with a history of head knocks and concussions, revealed that he had initially planned to hang up his boots in 2024.

However, after careful consideration and discussions with his loved ones, the 32-year-old has decided to call time on his 12-season, 27-year career in the game he loves.

"After much contemplation, I have made the decision to retire at the end of this year.

Rugby league has been a major part of my life, and I am proud of the career I have had," Keary stated on Monday.

"I owe a great deal to my teammates, coaches, support staff, family, friends, and mentors who have been there for me throughout my journey."

Keary took the opportunity to thank both former South Sydney coach Michael Maguire and current Roosters mentor Trent Robinson for their guidance and support throughout his career.

"Madge, you gave me my first shot in the big leagues, and I will always be grateful to you for that.

You taught me the ropes and instilled in me the toughness needed to succeed," Keary said, acknowledging the influence of his coaches on his career.

The NRL community is now left to reflect on the retirement of one of the game's most respected players, as Keary prepares to hang up his boots and bid farewell to the field he has called home for nearly three decades.
