The Sydney Roosters have suffered a significant setback just before their season opener against the New Zealand Warriors.
Star centre Robert Toia has been sidelined due to a foot injury, which previously kept him out of the trials in February.
While the injury does not appear to be critical, the Roosters' medical team has chosen to proceed with caution.
In his absence, Junior Pauga will step in as the right centre for the Roosters.
Toia showcased his talent last season, earning the title of Rookie of the Year and establishing himself as a key player in the right centre spot for the tri-colours.
His impressive performance led to a surprise State of Origin selection, when coach Billy Slater awarded him a debut jersey after just a few matches in the top league.
The promising young Tongan centre made waves at the state level, effectively defending against Latrell Mitchell and minimizing his impact throughout the series.
Unfortunately, Toia's injury isn't the only concern for the Roosters as they head into Round 1; new recruit and NSW Blues hooker Reece Robson is also nursing a hand injury and is anticipated to return by Round 7.
