As the Sydney Roosters gear up for the 2026 NRL season, a fresh leadership structure is taking shape. Team captain James Tedesco is adopting a more supportive role with the recent addition of seasoned halfback Daly Cherry-Evans.
In previous seasons, Tedesco was heavily burdened with the responsibility of leading the Roosters on the field, often drawing criticism for overextending himself.
The arrival of Cherry-Evans has alleviated some of this pressure, allowing Tedesco to concentrate more on making a considerable impact rather than solely organizing plays.
"I'm not the main voice," Tedesco shared with the Daily Telegraph, recognizing the experience and composed leadership that Cherry-Evans brings to the team, both at the NRL level and in representative matches.
"Cherry has been the captain of his state and team for a long, long time now, so the way he's able to get a message across very clearly and calmly to the team is something that we've all noticed and really enjoyed so far."
Cherry-Evans' influence has also been advantageous for the younger players on the team. For instance, Sam Walker has been leveraging Cherry-Evans' expertise as a valuable mentor during the pre-season.
Additionally, Hugo Savala is experiencing increased opportunities this year, having trained in various positions. Tedesco has expressed confidence in Savala's adaptability and skills.
