The Sydney Roosters are optimistic about retaining Hugo Savala, believing he will contribute significantly across various positions for the team.
Savala, who filled the halves role in 2025 due to injuries affecting the Roosters, has seen a shift in his position this year.
With Sam Walker back in form and the arrival of Daly Cherry-Evans, Savala found himself reassessing his role during the pre-season. Although not officially confirmed, updates to the NRL's signing tracker revealed he has extended his contract through 2028, aligning with off-season speculations.
His versatility stands out as he can perform in multiple positions on the field. This was evident during his first appearance in 2026, where he came off the bench when Sam Walker was assessed for a concussion.
Although he is likely to play at lock or second-row, Savala also spent time at halfback and in the centres during the Roosters' opening match against Manly, which marked their first victory of the season.
Captain James Tedesco acknowledged Savala's adaptability and approach.
"He's going to play a lot of footy in different positions, and he's shown that versatility in pre-season," Tedesco stated in his post-match comments.
"Guys like him that can play multiple positions, with how the game's going, it's very important.
"Having good attitudes around the group, he adds a lot of value in and around training, and he's going to play a lot of footy for us for sure."
