Brandon Smith has received an early release from the Roosters and is set to join the Rabbitohs today to continue his rehabilitation.
He is expected to return to play in about seven weeks.
Smith, who signed a two-year deal to join Souths in 2026, passed his medical on Monday.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson noted that the decision was financially motivated, as Connor Watson and Zach Dockar-Clay have been performing well this season.
Smith joined the Roosters in 2023 following a successful period in Melbourne.
However, he faced challenges at his new club before showcasing good form last season.
Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury just before the finals.
"We appreciate Brandon's contributions over the last two and a half years; he was playing some very good football before he was sidelined by his knee injury," remarked Roosters head of recruitment Daniel Anderson.
He added, "With his return to play not too far away, we thank Brandon and extend the best wishes in the next chapter of his career."
