Bati rookie hoping for second NRL chance after ref ban

Keresi Maya once thought that the COVID pandemic and his six-year suspension had dashed his dreams of playing in the NRL. However, after making his debut for Fiji in the Pacific Championships, this rookie forward is optimistic about a second opportunity.

The only Fiji-based player in the Bati squad, Maya signed with the Sharks in 2020. Unfortunately, he had to return home as the league was halted and international travel was restricted due to COVID-19.

Back in Fiji, he transitioned to rugby union but faced a setback when he received a six-year ban for punching a referee-an action he deeply regrets at the age of 24.

While inactive on the field, Maya turned to refereeing before eventually making a comeback to rugby league two years ago.

Wise Kativerata, the Bati coach, has shown a keen interest in Maya's development. After including him in the squad for last year's Pacific Championships in Fiji, Kativerata gave Maya his Test debut two weeks ago against the Cook Islands.
