A fresh development has emerged in the Rookie of the Year discussion, highlighting Roosters winger Mark Nawaqanitawase's unique situation. Although he is not eligible for the Dally M Rookie of the Year award due to previous representation with the Wallabies and participation in Olympic sevens, he remains in contention for the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) version of the award. Amidst his impressive try-scoring performances, he is also working towards securing a Kangaroos jersey for the upcoming Ashes tour.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo addressed Nawaqanitawase's eligibility earlier this year, clarifying that his past experiences disqualify him from the traditional rookie award. "The commission had made a policy change decision around the eligibility for rookie of the year, and I think it's contemporary and hasn't been looked at for a while," he explained. He added, "The decision was really simple. It (the award) is meant for genuine rookies, so players that are coming through pathways systems, and not for players that have got significant experience, even if it's in other sports."

Teammate Connor Watson expressed support, noting it was impressive to see Nawaqanitawase prompt a rule change mid-season. The RLPA has since confirmed that Nawaqanitawase is eligible for its rookie of the year award, similar to how former sevens player Gayle Broughton won in 2022. "I'm not here for the individual awards," Nawaqanitawase stated, emphasizing his focus on team success. "It was funny what Connor said, but they can do whatever they want. I'm just here to win games and hopefully win a premiership."
