David Furner, an assistant coach for the Wests Tigers, has been axed from the team as part of a cleanout.

Furner, who returned to the Tigers alongside Tim Sheens, was initially told that he had a future at the club on the revamped coaching staff.

However, this week he was informed of his departure.

Furner is the latest of Sheens' lieutenants to be shown the door, following the departure of Warren McDonnell, who was hand-picked by Sheens for the club's rebuild.

Furner, a highly respected and experienced assistant in the game, was expected to stay and provide guidance to rookie head coach Benji Marshall.

His departure was confirmed in a meeting with Marshall, leaving him surprised and taken aback.

The Tigers have already strengthened their coaching staff for the next season by adding former South Sydney assistant John Morris.
