Former NRL referee Gavin Badger has taken to social media to defend Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco, who was caught up in controversy during his side's elimination final victory over Cronulla.

Tedesco charged down one of two field goal attempts from Nicho Hynes that could have sent the game into extra time.

The Roosters ended the Sharks' season with a gutsy 13-12 victory.

Despite being sin-binned, Tedesco's presence was crucial as the Sharks missed several opportunities, including two charged down field goal attempts from Hynes.

Rugby League social media account 'The Mole' claimed that Tedesco was offside in the match-defining play, but Badger argued that the image used was taken after the ball had cleared the ruck.

He criticized critics for trying to create controversy where there was none.
