Recruit Sidelined: Canterbury's Thompson Out 10 Weeks

Canterbury's preparations for the NRL season have been hit by a significant setback after new signing Leo Thompson was ruled out for around 10 weeks.

The club confirmed on Monday that scans revealed the extent of the calf injury Thompson suffered during Maori All-Stars camp.

He had been withdrawn from the All-Stars match as a precaution when the issue first appeared to be simple tightness.

Scans have since diagnosed a serious problem that will keep the 25-year-old sidelined for the season opener against St George Illawarra in Las Vegas and through much of the opening two months.

Thompson was recruited from Newcastle to provide extra size and physical presence in the middle following the Bulldogs' early finals exit despite a top-four finish last year.

Club director Phil Gould announced the setback on social media and struck a pragmatic tone about the injury.

"Not good news for Leo Thompson ... MRI reveals grade three calf tear ... 10 weeks return to play at this stage," Gould wrote.

"It is what it is. We move on. Tough game rugby league."

Despite the disappointment over Thompson, there was encouraging news elsewhere in the squad.

Star playmaker Matt Burton, who left the field during Canterbury's 28-0 trial victory over Newcastle, received a more positive update.

The club will now reassess its forward rotation and may look to short-term cover while Thompson recovers.

Coaches and medical staff are expected to manage his rehabilitation with a view to a full return once cleared medically.
