Rabbitohs to bounce back with Mitchell's return

Jye Gray set to be axed by Souths in brutal move after rise to top of Dally M leaderboard

Despite leading the Dally M Medal count, Jye Gray is set to be axed by Souths as Wayne Bennett has indicated he will relinquish the No.1 jersey to Latrell Mitchell.

Mitchell is expected to return from injury for the round five game against the Roosters, leaving Gray in a difficult position despite his exceptional performance in Mitchell's absence.

Gray has been instrumental in Souths' strong start to the season, contributing with huge running metres, attacking prowess, and solid defense.

In the round four upset against Penrith, Gray ran for 172 metres, had six tackle breaks, and scored a try, earning three Dally M points to climb to the top of the leaderboard ahead of star players like Kalyn Ponga and Payne Haas.

Despite his impressive form, Gray is still set to lose his starting position to Mitchell, who Bennett has confirmed will be returning to fullback.

Bennett stated, "Fullback is his (Mitchell) position.

It's his number one position." This decision puts Gray in a tough spot, as he has been a key player for Souths and has outperformed expectations.

Souths' success without key players like Mitchell and Cameron Murray is largely thanks to Gray's contributions, making the upcoming change even more difficult for the young fullback.

Bennett will have a tough decision to make regarding Gray's future role in the team, as the talented player faces the harsh reality of being replaced despite his stellar performances.
