Rabbitohs Set to Return to Allianz Stadium

The longstanding conflict between South Sydney and the state government appears to be reaching a resolution, as the Rabbitohs are set to gradually return to Allianz Stadium.

With a desire to vacate Accor Stadium and reclaim their spot at Moore Park, Souths received the green light on Tuesday to host four home games at Allianz beginning next season.

This arrangement is projected to expand to five home games in 2028, while the Rabbitohs will continue to host seven games per season at Accor Stadium until their current deal expires in 2030.

For years, the Rabbitohs have advocated to terminate their agreement for Sydney Olympic Park, especially after the cancellation of planned upgrades at Accor Stadium during the pandemic.

Simultaneously, they have expressed a strong interest in returning to the refurbished Allianz Stadium, which served as their main home from 1988 to 2005.

Frustration mounted among Souths officials in recent years as the anticipated transition failed to materialize, especially since both stadiums are under the management of Venues NSW.

The NSW government had contended that the Rabbitohs' relocation would impose a hefty financial burden on taxpayers due to the necessity of maintaining adequate events at Accor Stadium.

Additionally, their rivals, the Sydney Roosters, have consistently claimed that they should be the sole tenants of Allianz Stadium, having established their presence at Moore Park since 1908.

In this evolving scenario, Souths managed to reduce their home games from ten at Accor in 2024 to seven this season, while also playing two at Allianz and three at neutral venues.
