Souths bigwig Blake Solly has been put on the spot regarding the culture at the club in the wake of Jason Demetriou's ousting.

Demetriou got the boot after a last-minute Rabbitohs board powwow on Tuesday night, with Ben Hornby stepping up to steer the ship in the interim.

Hornby's first test will be Thursday night's showdown with the reigning champs, Penrith Panthers.

South Sydney has spilled the beans that former Bunnies boss, Wayne Bennett, is leading the race to take over after his stint with the Dolphins wraps up at the year's end.

But the Demetriou drama has uncovered some harsh truths at Souths, echoing concerns raised a year ago by Sam Burgess.

Burgess, who hung up his boots in 2019 and took on a coaching role at the Bunnies, departed last year amidst claims that he was undermining Demetriou.

Burgess clashed with the Souths brass after criticizing the club's training standards.

He alleged that star players like Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker were getting special treatment from the coaching staff before his exit.

Burgess then landed a gig coaching Warrington in the English Super League, marking his debut as a head coach in the pro scene.
