Queensland's Secret Weapon for State of Origin

Sam Walker celebrates a try in a rugby league match with two teammates.

In the lead-up to next week's State of Origin opener, Sam Walker remains an enigma for New South Wales.

Though many Blues players are familiar with him, as half of their spine competes alongside the rookie Queensland halfback at the club level, this doesn't provide a complete advantage.

Walker is recognized as one of the game's modern improvisational talents, complicating matters for opponents.

"Playing alongside him, he doesn't know what he's doing half the time, so it's especially hard for the other team to know," commented Reece Robson, the Roosters and New South Wales hooker.

Even James Tedesco, recalled at fullback and having played with Walker throughout his NRL journey, acknowledges the challenge of predicting Walker's moves.

"I know he'll be looking for some short kicks or passes, I know he's got some tricks up the sleeve even if he doesn't always know what they are until they come out," Tedesco remarked.

"I'm proud of him, but he's a young halfback in Origin - you know we're going to put him under pressure."

While Tedesco highlights Walker's youth, it is essential to note that this does not equate to a lack of experience. Walker debuted for the Roosters at just 18 in 2021, marking the start of a dual progression in his career.

He has consistently been a player full of promise since his rookie of the year campaign, leading to heightened expectations as fans eagerly await his future.
