Queensland legends Corey Parker and Ian Healy suggest that the Maroons should strategically target Payne Haas during the upcoming State of Origin opener, drawing inspiration from tactics used by Cameron Smith.
Haas is one of two key NSW players facing injury concerns, with teammate Stephen Crichton also trying to recover in time for the game.
Reports indicate that Crichton struggled during training and was seen with a heavily iced leg, prompting the Bulldogs' Matt Burton to be named as injury cover.
NSW coach Laurie Daley is optimistic about Haas's participation, stating, "Payne will play [and with] Critta, see how he is tomorrow." He notes that Crichton's injury is merely a cork and not a strain, highlighting that they are focused on managing the swelling before making a decision ahead of game day.
If Crichton fails to recover, it would be a significant setback for the Blues, with options like 18th man Campbell Graham or Burton stepping in.
Both Parker and Healy, speaking on SEN radio, argue that targeting Haas could be crucial, especially at the beginning of the match.
"He'd be the one I'd be going after," Parker declared.
Healy echoed this sentiment by recalling how, in the past, Cameron Smith strategically targeted former NSW player Willie Mason: "I reckon it was Cameron Smith cutting him down from marker every time he ran.
And more around the thighs and hips."
Healy emphasizes that getting physical with Haas's legs could be vital for the Maroons.
Parker adds that Haas's injury situation makes the start of the series particularly compelling, suggesting Haas is likely to take one of the initial carries and seek to propel his team forward with his powerful runs.
As both teams prepare for the clash at Suncorp Stadium, the strategies devised by past legends might play a significant role in influencing the outcome of Game 1.
