Queensland Maroons: Caught in Blues' Kick Trap

Mal Meninga levels accusation against Queensland players amid scary truth about NSW victory

Former Queensland coach Mal Meninga has raised significant concerns regarding the Maroons following their 18-6 defeat to NSW in the State of Origin opener.

He emphasized that the 12-point margin was misleading, as the Maroons were outplayed, conceding four tries to one, and their only saving grace was Nathan Cleary's atypical goal-kicking performance.

Meninga pointed out that Cleary, along with his halves partner Mitchell Moses, effectively controlled the match by utilizing their long kicking game to pin the Queensland team in their own territory.

This allowed NSW to dominate field position, while their forward pack, notably led by man of the match Payne Haas, overwhelmed Queensland physically.

Despite acknowledging the lack of success on the scoreboard, Meninga insisted the defeat wasn't due to a lack of effort from the Queensland players.

Instead, he cited ill-discipline and inadequate forward play as key factors that led to their downfall.

He urged that Billy Slater's squad must devise a strategy to counteract the Blues' dominating tactics if they hope to remain competitive in the series during Game 2 in Perth.

"The scoreline was flattering (for Queensland)," Meninga stated on SEN radio.

"NSW dominated and there were players on their side that were prepared to cop it on the chin.

The Queensland team needs to find some answers.

It's not because of personnel, it's the way they play."

He elaborated on NSW's defensive planning and territorial control, which stifled Queensland's ability to create offensive opportunities.

Meninga acknowledged the Maroons' hard work and defensive efforts but emphasized the pressing need to improve their attack.

"NSW came to Suncorp with a really good plan and executed well.

They didn't have a bad player.

Queensland couldn't turn their defensive quality into any attacking prowess.

They must come up with a better plan when NSW turn the game into a grind."

In summary, Meninga's remarks highlight the need for introspection and strategic adjustment for the Queensland team as they prepare for the upcoming match.
