Penrith Panthers have fallen short in their NSW Cup season opener, with a 26-12 loss to Newtown Jets at Parker Street Reserve.

Despite a valiant effort, highlighted by Tom Jenkins' impressive two tries in his return to the team, the Panthers were unable to overcome the Jets due to costly errors and penalties.

The Newtown Jets, facing an early setback with the loss of star fullback Liam Ison, managed to secure a commanding 26-12 victory over the Penrith Panthers in challenging conditions at Parker St Reserve.

The defending premiers initially struggled with errors but rallied to regain the lead, with centre Thomas Jenkins' brace of tries sparking hope for the Panthers.

Niwhai Puru, Brad Fearnley, Billy Burns, and Riley Pollard played pivotal roles in the Jets' triumph, each contributing a try to the scoreboard.

Despite not scoring himself, Pollard impressed with his playmaking abilities, setting up key attacking opportunities for his team.

In a game marked by early nerves from both teams, the Jets struck first as they capitalized on a swift leftward shift to put winger Eli Clark in prime position to score.

Halfback Niwahi Puru then capitalized on the opportunity, darting inside to secure a try in the corner and give the Jets an early lead of 4-0.
