In a surprising twist of fate that has sent shockwaves through the Rugby League world, Braith Anasta has put the kibosh on any hopes of Kalyn Ponga making an appearance in this year's State of Origin series.
The former NRL star firmly believes that Queensland will not entertain the idea of having both Ponga and Reece Walsh in their lineup, dismissing it as a mere fantasy.
Ponga, a seasoned Queensland representative with seven appearances under his belt and a key player in their victorious 2022 campaign, was notably absent from last year's series due to concerns over concussions.
In his absence, Walsh took the reins at fullback for Games I and II, showcasing his talent before being sidelined for Game III due to suspension.
Heading into the 2024 series, Queensland selectors find themselves in a dilemma over who to slot in at fullback - the up-and-coming Broncos star, Walsh, or the experienced Ponga, who clinched the prestigious Dally M award in 2023.
However, Billy Slater, the mastermind behind the Maroons, is toying with the idea of throwing caution to the wind and selecting both dynamic fullbacks, hinting at a potentially groundbreaking move.
"I'm not one to shy away from innovation and thinking outside the box," Slater remarked.
"the focus is on securing a third consecutive Origin victory, and if that means having two exceptional talents like Ponga and Walsh in the same squad, then so be it.
After all, anything is possible in the world of Rugby League."
As the speculation swirls around Ponga's potential inclusion, one thing is certain - the battleground for fullback supremacy in the Maroons camp is heating up, and only time will tell which warrior will ultimately emerge victorious.
