Andrew Johns has publicly weighed in on the ongoing speculation surrounding Kalyn Ponga's potential departure from the Newcastle Knights, directly countering comments made by his brother Matty.
Recent reports suggest that Ponga is exploring a switch to rugby union, with a New Zealand-based agent reportedly shopping him around to various clubs in that sport.
Additionally, the Knights are apparently preparing to part ways with coach Adam O'Brien at the end of the season, reportedly willing to pay him a buyout of $1.2 million.
However, the primary concern among fans and analysts is Kalyn Ponga's future, as he still has two years left on a lucrative contract worth $1.4 million per season.
While Ponga's management has not formally approached the Knights for an early release, there is some indication from the club that they would consider it if he desires to leave.
As Newcastle's greatest player and a two-time premiership-winning halfback, Johns stated that Ponga should be allowed to move on if that's what he wants, expressing gratitude for Ponga's contributions since joining the club in 2018.
"I give him a big thank you for coming to the club and if he wants to move on, I say thank you for what you have done for the club," Johns remarked during the "Freddy and the Eighth" podcast.
He highlighted Ponga's significant impact, noting, "He has carried the club.
He signed after the three wooden spoons in a row and that year, the Cowboys got to a grand final."
Johns further explained that while Ponga was signed for substantial money, struggling clubs often must pay a premium to attract marquee players.
He added that Ponga has brought valuable attention to the club, benefiting sponsorships and enhancing its profile through his considerable social media presence.
"So I would say thank you to Kalyn for what you have delivered to the club.
Thank you very much.
If you want to move on, so be it.
No animosity whatsoever," Johns concluded.
Ponga has not publicly commented on the speculation regarding his future but is expected to provide updates later this week.
