Ponga's dreams on the line, Munster's steam rising

Cameron Munster theory gathers steam as Billy Slater could be forced to axe Kalyn Ponga

Cameron Munster's potential transition to fullback for Queensland is increasingly plausible, especially after Kalyn Ponga's lackluster performance against Parramatta.

Initially, Ponga had a strong start to the season, surpassing Reece Walsh for the Maroons' fullback role, particularly as Walsh is sidelined with a knee injury.

However, the Knights have struggled, losing seven of their last eight games, and Ponga's recent form has been concerning.

Despite Ponga's impressive stats-22 runs for 254 meters, six tackles broken, and two line-breaks-during the 28-6 defeat, many analysts fear his declining performance could risk his spot in the upcoming Origin 1 on May 28.

While coach Billy Slater could consider Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow for fullback, he would prefer to keep him in the centers.

There are emerging discussions about using Munster at fullback to accommodate Tom Dearden at five-eighth, given Dearden's strong performance with the Cowboys and his current position as the Kangaroos' No.6.

Daly Cherry-Evans appears set to maintain his halfback role, although his performance has also been subpar.

This strategic shift could lead to Ponga either taking the No.

14 role off the bench or potentially missing the team altogether.

As the selection nears, Slater's choices may drastically alter the team's dynamics for the upcoming series.
