Ponga Updates Rehab Before Vegas Opener

The Newcastle Knights have made some promising signings following their unfortunate wooden spoon finish in 2025, but for real success in the upcoming season, they need captain Kalyn Ponga back on the field.

Fortunately for the Knights, Ponga has shown considerable optimism about being ready for Round 1 of the 2026 NRL season as he continues to recover from a persistent foot injury that hindered his pre-season preparations.

The fullback has taken a cautious approach this off-season after his scans indicated bone bruising in his left foot, a lingering issue related to the Lisfranc injury he suffered last season.

Due to this, the Newcastle team has been careful with Ponga, managing his training intensity and at times requiring him to wear a protective moon boot.

Despite these challenges, the 27-year-old athlete remains optimistic about his recovery's progress.

"The foot is good," Ponga told the Newcastle Herald. "I'm ticking boxes, I feel pretty good, the foot feels pretty good."
