Queensland Origin star Kalyn Ponga has made a significant decision, switching his international allegiance from the Kangaroos to the Kiwis following the International Rugby League's (IRL) approval.
Ponga is poised to debut for New Zealand during the upcoming World Cup, having received unanimous backing for his application at a recent board meeting.
While born in Western Australia, Ponga's lineage connects him to New Zealand, where his parents hail from; he initially represented Australia in 2018 by participating in the State of Origin.
His engagement with Australian rugby league has been limited to a 2019 Nines tournament and appearances for the Junior Kangaroos, strengthening his case for the switch.
In his application, Ponga expressed, "These were appearances I am grateful for; however, upon reflection, they do not reflect where my heart, my heritage, and my deepest sense of belonging truly lie."
He added, "While I was born in Australia, my connection to New Zealand runs deep through every generation of my family."
Ponga further stated, "My roots, my whakapapa, and my identity are firmly grounded in this country and its people."
The talented player has also represented the Mãori All Stars three times in their annual matchup against the Indigenous All Stars.
Ponga remarked, "Those experiences have only deepened my connection to New Zealand rugby league and to the broader Mãori community."
