PNG stars help launch London's Lockyer era in style
Kumuls centre Alex Max scored two tries as the Papua New Guinea contingent contributed to a successful start for the Broncos under Darren Lockyer's ownership.
Under the guidance of Kumuls coach Jason Demetriou, and featuring five players from last year's victorious Pacific Bowl team, the Broncos emerged triumphant with a 44-12 victory over Widnes in the Challenge Cup's opening round at Cherry Red Records Stadium in Wimbledon.
Lockyer and co-owner Grant Wechsel were present in a crowd of 4,380, which included fans waving Papua New Guinea flags and many who were experiencing rugby league in London for the first time.
Max scored both London's initial and final tries, while former Rabbitohs and Eels halfback Dean Hawkins delivered a commanding performance, earning him the man-of-the-match title.
Hawkins was one of ten Broncos players making their debut for the club, joined by Kumuls fullback Morea Morea, Max, centre Robert Mathias, prop Epel Kapinias, and playmaker Gairo Voro.
