ARLC Chair Peter V'landys has expressed strong optimism about the potential success of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) NRL team, expected to join the league in 2028.

Following a recent visit to Port Moresby, where V'landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo assessed proposed accommodation and a Centre of Excellence, he believes the PNG franchise could rival the success of the Penrith Panthers.

This visit coincided with the announcement of the new franchise's inaugural board by PNG Prime Minister James Marape, alongside Australia's Minister for the Pacific Islands Affairs, Pat Conroy.

Their trip included evaluations of the facilities that will house and train players and their families.

The expectation is that the NRL's 19th franchise will be competitive right from the beginning, partially due to tax exemptions provided by the PNG Government.

In a show of community engagement, Marape also initiated a competition aimed at naming the new franchise.

Furthermore, V'landys noted that the team would ultimately belong to its members, emphasizing a connection to the local community.
