PNG Chiefs dispute threatens NRL schedule

PNG Chiefs welcome High Court ruling, NZ Rugby name dispute set to continue into 2027

The PNG Chiefs plan to reveal their inaugural logo and jersey next week before their scheduled 2028 entry as the NRL's 19th franchise.

New Zealand Rugby and the Waikato-based Super Rugby Chiefs are pursuing legal action against the NRL and Papua New Guinea over the proposed team name.

Founded in 1996, the Chiefs hold intellectual-property rights to their name in New Zealand and Australia, and to their logo in New Zealand.

An Australian judge this week denied an injunction to block the name; a New Zealand court is due to rule early next year.

If the NRL loses there, it could have to rename the franchise.

The NRL and PNG Chiefs have indicated they would refuse to play in New Zealand if forced to change the name, with Peter V'landys backing that stance.

This could disrupt a draw that relies on the Warriors hosting home games across the Tasman.

Rivals might face extra trips to New Zealand, or the Warriors could lose home fixtures.
