The PNG Chiefs plan to unveil their inaugural logo and supporter jersey in Port Moresby on Wednesday, October 21.
New Zealand High Court Justice Karen Grau dismissed applications for an urgent injunction before the launch, giving the NRL an early advantage in its dispute with NZ Rugby.
The ruling does not settle the branding dispute, which is set to proceed in New Zealand courts in 2027.
If the NRL loses, it may still have to change the PNG Chiefs name.
Rugby NZ chief executive Steve Lancaster stressed, "Today's decision is not a judgment on the strength of the case, and the matter will still be heard in full,"
He said Rugby NZ would continue defending its Hamilton-based Super Rugby franchise.
Lancaster also addressed the brand: "As the trademark holder, the responsibility to protect the Chiefs brand hasn't changed. We remain open to working with the (NRL) on a solution."
PNG Chiefs chief executive Lorna McPherson welcomed the decision and said, "As the matter remains before the Court, no further comment on this matter will be provided at this time."
