Piakura's Return Delayed After Surgery

The return date for back-rower Brendan Piakura has been pushed back unexpectedly as he continues to heal from knee surgery, casting doubt on his availability for the early season games.

The Brisbane Broncos earlier revealed in late January that Piakura had sustained a meniscus tear during training, estimating an eight-week recovery period.

In response to writer Isaac Issa on social media, Piakura said, "Not eight weeks, bud," and added, "I ran today, back next week," referencing the club's update on his condition.

The 23-year-old underwent surgery in the pre-season due to the injury, and although there were hopes he might be ready for Round 1, a recent evaluation has shown that he will need additional rehabilitation.

Broncos coach Michael Maguire confirmed that Piakura is now expected to miss at least the first game of the season, with the possibility of returning by Round 3.

Maguire stated, "I don't think Brendan will be right for round 1," when speaking to The Courier Mail.

He added, "He's not as far forward as we would have hoped, just seeing him at training (on Wednesday)."

"He might miss a couple of games," Maguire expressed.

"We're hoping he could be right for round 2, but from looking at him, he needs a bit more time."
