Peter Mamouzelos is determined to fulfill his dream of playing rugby league in Greece, following the lifting of the ban that previously made the sport illegal in the country.
Despite representing Greece at the last World Cup in 2022, Mamouzelos has never played in Athens due to the ban.
He described how rugby league was banned until after the team qualified for the tournament by beating Serbia in Belgrade.
Mamouzelos, who has become South Sydney's first-choice hooker under coach Wayne Bennett, has strong Greek heritage through his parents and has grown up in Maroubra.
He admired Braith Anasta, another Rabbitohs junior with Greek roots, and has also played alongside Lachlan Ilias and Billy Magoulias at club or Test level.
Mamouzelos expressed his excitement about the opportunity to play in Greece, stating, "It would be a dream come true to help grow the game there." He emphasized the significance of representing his heritage on the international stage, saying, "It's not just about playing, it's a responsibility to represent family, friends, and the whole Greek community in Australia and overseas." Mamouzelos highlighted the cultural significance of rugby league for Greeks, noting, "Rugby league means everything for the Greeks because it helps connect us to Australia - a country we love, and to the Greek heritage that we hold so dear."
Reflecting on the intense rivalry between the Rabbitohs and Roosters ahead of their Multicultural Round clash, Mamouzelos shared his insights, saying, "It's a massive rivalry that goes back generations." He acknowledged the importance of embracing multiculturalism in the sport, stating, "It's a great opportunity to showcase the diverse cultures that make up the game." Mamouzelos's journey from being denied the opportunity to play in Greece to now aspiring to represent his heritage on the international stage serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of athletes in overcoming obstacles to pursue their dreams.
