Perth Bears CEO quits amid board rift

Board pressure strikes Perth Bears, CEO’s role in jeopardy

Gareth Holmes will lead the Perth Bears as interim CEO after Anthony De Ceglie announced he was leaving the position on Friday.

The club said it would provide further details about its permanent CEO arrangements in the coming days.

De Ceglie's departure followed reports of tension with the board. Code Sports reported on Tuesday evening that the board was close to dismissing him, but Australian Rugby League Commission executive chairman Peter V'landys intervened.

The reprieve was brief for De Ceglie, a former media executive appointed less than 18 months ago to lead the NRL expansion club ahead of its first season.

He said he was "extremely proud" of the Bears' achievements and added, "I have no doubt that the Perth Bears will continue to grow and grow, and become a behemoth of the national sporting stage,"

De Ceglie also said, "The Perth Bears have a professional and dedicated executive leadership team supported by very talented group of committed staff.

"The club is in exceptional hands under the leadership of Head Coach Mal Meninga and Assistant Coach Ben Gardiner. Getting to work alongside both of them for the past year has been one of the greatest highlights of my professional life.
