Penrith's Cleary faces delay in NRL comeback plans

Nathan Cleary suffers 'setback' as expected NRL return for Panthers thrown into doubt

The Penrith Panthers find themselves facing a "curveball" as star halfback Nathan Cleary's return to the NRL is now in doubt, with the player experiencing a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Cleary, who hasn't seen action in the last two weeks, was eyeing a comeback against the Wests Tigers in round seven after the team's bye.

However, reports from the Sydney Morning Herald suggest that Cleary is now in a race against time to be fit for the Tigers clash.

Despite the setback, the Panthers are adamant that Cleary's injury hasn't worsened.

The team is taking a cautious approach and is unlikely to rush Cleary back before he's fully ready, especially with upcoming games against tough opponents.

While the Panthers managed a victory over the Roosters without Cleary, they suffered a heavy loss to the Sea Eagles last weekend.

The defending premiers will face the Cowboys in round eight, which is shaping up to be a more plausible return date for the talented halfback.

Coach Ivan Cleary, who is also Nathan's father, had previously mentioned that the injury could be a "blessing in disguise" as it would give Nathan time to address other minor issues.

This injury is not unfamiliar territory for Cleary, as he dealt with a similar hamstring tear in 2023.

With Cleary's return date uncertain, Panthers fans will have to wait a bit longer to see their star player back in action on the field.

In the meantime, the team will have to "step up to the plate" and continue to perform in his absence.
