The Penrith Panthers have been accused of utilizing an illegal tactic to protect their star halfback, Nathan Cleary.

According to a report by news.com.au, the Panthers have been getting away with blatant penalties in order to shield Cleary from opposition players.

Specifically, Penrith players Isaah Yeo and Moses Leota have been strategically positioning themselves in the defensive line to block opponents attempting to put pressure on Cleary's kicks.

The tactics were exposed during a segment on NRL 360, where footage clearly showed the middle forwards subtly but effectively moving to shield Cleary.

The accusations have sparked controversy, with Paul Crawley expressing his concerns on NRL 360.

Crawley stated, "Cleary is playing in career-best form, there's conversations going on about is he as good as the greatest? As good as Joey? As good as Sterlo? But I tell you one thing he doesn't need, he doesn't need a leg up from the referees ignoring some of the tactics going on to give him protection." Crawley went on to urge viewers to review the incidents involving Yeo and Leota, implying that their actions were questionable and potentially went against the rules of the game.

These allegations have raised questions about the fairness and integrity of the game, particularly with regards to the role of the referees.

The article suggests that if the referees are indeed turning a blind eye to the Panthers' tactics, it could be seen as favoritism towards Cleary and could potentially influence the outcome of matches.

The controversy surrounding this issue highlights the importance of fair play and the role of officials in maintaining the integrity of the sport.
