Several people at Penrith who knew about Nathan Cleary's injury called his double fracture the worst leg break they had ever seen.
The account carries a warning that it contains graphic content.
On Sunday, Penrith's medical staff worked with paramedics to keep Cleary's leg straight as he was taken off the field.
They did so to reduce the risk of blood flow to his left foot being cut off.
There were fears the injury could cause major complications if Cleary did not reach hospital by ambulance in time for emergency surgery.
