Payne Haas Makes Contract Call with a Twist

Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas has reportedly decided to re-sign with the club, but only for a one-year deal.

Haas, whose contract expires at the end of 2026, has been free to negotiate with other teams since November 1. There were also rumors about him considering a switch to rugby union.

However, those plans were sidelined due to the postponement of the R360 tournament-a lucrative competition backed by Saudi Arabian investments-until 2028. Originally, the event was set to launch in October 2026.

The talented prop was poised to receive offers as high as $3 million per year for a potential move. The one-year extension with the Broncos, reported by News Corp, keeps the door open for Haas to transition to rugby union when the tournament eventually starts.

Currently, this decision ensures that Haas will remain with Brisbane for at least the next two seasons. However, there is uncertainty beyond that, with R360 likely revving up its recruitment efforts towards the latter part of 2026.

Under the stipulations of his NRL contract, Haas will still have the ability to negotiate with other clubs starting November 1. Nonetheless, R360 does not have to adhere to these timelines, as they operate independently of the Australian competition.
