Off-contract Brisbane Broncos player Payne Haas has reportedly been seen in Newcastle, his hometown, raising speculation about his future. Despite numerous rumors suggesting he would secure a contract extension with the Broncos beyond 2026, Haas remains unsigned.
Haas and his management have expressed a strong preference to stay with the Broncos if he continues in the NRL. However, as each day passes without a contract, the possibility that he might explore other options grows.
According to Wide World of Sports' The Mole, Haas was spotted in Newcastle this week with his partner. Since November 1, he has been able to engage in discussions with rival clubs. Previously, Rugby 360 reported that he had been offered around $3 million annually, but complications have since arisen in that avenue.
The competition for Haas has diminished, with a potential start date for that league now set for 2028. This situation has also affected Parramatta Eels winger Zac Lomax, who is currently seeking a deal in the Super Rugby after being released from his contract just a year into his signing.
It's evident that if financial considerations become pivotal for Haas, other teams may have greater flexibility than the Broncos to pursue him.
