Papenhuyzen's future: Rugby dreams or cash screams?

Ryan Papenhuyzen responds after Melbourne Storm star linked with $2m move away from NRL

Melbourne Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen has addressed rumors linking him to a lucrative move to a European rugby league amid reports of a potential $2 million offer.

Papenhuyzen's current contract extends until the end of 2026, and he is known as one of the most popular players in the NRL.

His decision last year to sign only a one-year extension with the Storm raised questions about his long-term commitment.

With the Perth-based Bears expected to join the competition in 2027, there's speculation they could make Papenhuyzen the first player in the league to break the $2 million salary barrier.

Additionally, the 26-year-old has garnered attention from a northern hemisphere rugby union competition called R360, backed by Saudi Arabian interests, which is reportedly in its early stages but has already made offers of similar magnitude.

Channel Nine reporter Danny Weidler mentioned on 100% Footy that Papenhuyzen is a potential target for this new rugby franchise.

In light of these reports, Papenhuyzen acknowledged that most players would have to "consider" such lucrative offers.

However, he remained noncommittal about his interest in switching to rugby union, emphasizing his current focus.

Papenhuyzen stated, "I've just got a big focus for winning the premiership and hopefully going back-to-back next year and then we'll see, but you always look forward to your future and see what's happening." He added confidence in his manager's ability to handle potential contract discussions, indicating that his priority is winning with the Storm rather than contemplating a move elsewhere at this time.
