Panthers' Tough Path Amid Hoodoo

NRL Finals Media Opportunity

Nathan Cleary wasn't born when the Bulldogs won the competition from outside the top four, but 30 years later, the Panthers halfback is hoping to end the drought as the four-time premiers look to extend their incredible winning streak.

In first-grade history, only two teams have clinched the grand final from outside the top four. This year, however, Penrith is in the bottom four of the finals alongside the formidable Roosters, known for their ability to score from anywhere.

The Panthers have a history of defying expectations during their successful run, and they have another opportunity to do so starting Saturday against the Warriors, who are guided by former Penrith prop James Fisher-Harris.

"I think it's just an exciting prospect. Experience goes into it a lot as well," Cleary said when discussing their potential to succeed.

"But I don't think we're even thinking too much about trying to win the comp at the moment. We've still got a tough task in front of us, going over to New Zealand in front of a sold-out crowd and playing the Warriors over there."

"So the full focus is on that and just trying to play the best footy at the most important time of the year."

After finishing last on the ladder after 12 rounds and allowing a surprising number of points, many wrote off the Panthers. However, they rebounded strong, winning nine consecutive matches to regain their top-four status.
