The Penrith Panthers have reportedly allowed two-time premiership-winning forward Luke Garner to explore opportunities with rival clubs, potentially leading to an early exit from his contract, which runs until the end of 2026.
According to au.news.yahoo.com, permission has been granted for Garner and his management to seek a new club a year ahead of schedule.
The Daily Telegraph highlights that while the Parramatta Eels were one of three teams interested in the versatile player, another club has presented a three-year deal.
At 29 years old, Garner boasts a record of 114 first-grade games, with 75 at the Wests Tigers and 39 at Penrith.
Throughout 2025, he has demonstrated his versatility by playing as a second-row, lock, and centre.
Garner contributed to the Panthers' grand final victories in both 2023 and 2024, coming off the bench in those crucial matches.
His potential departure could add him to a list of notable players, like Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton, Matt Burton, Viliame Kikau, and Api Koroisau, who have left Penrith due to salary cap constraints.
Fans have speculated that Garner might reunite with former teammates Crichton, Burton, and Kikau at the Bulldogs.
However, many are questioning the rationale behind the Panthers' decision to let him go early, particularly given his significance to the team's success in 2025.
The Panthers currently have ample depth in the back-row, with players such as Isaah Yeo, Isaiah Papali'i, Scott Sorensen, Liam Henry, and Mavrik Geyer rounding out their roster.
Additionally, former Panther Bryce Cartwright has returned to the Penrith system after leaving the Eels, although there are doubts regarding his future prospects in the NRL.
The situation highlights the complex dynamics of team rosters amid financial constraints and the ongoing pursuit of talent by other clubs.
As Garner explores his options, the NRL community is keenly watching to see where he might land next.
